The Ways Women’s Bodies Differ To MenOn by
Women’s bodies respond differently to exercise, which makes their metabolism react in a different manner compared to men.
Both men and women store and burn body fat differently as women tend to burn less fat at rest, as they tend to burn more carbohydrates.
Also, women have greater fat storage after eating (preferential for pregnancy as that’s how their bodies work), contributing to a higher level of body fat percentage.
During exercise, women rely more on fat for energy. Fat loss happens from the upper body in women, followed by the lower body.
Men’s fat is usually visceral (more metabolically active), whereas women’s fat is subcutaneous.
Of course, stress affects both men and women, but women tend to be more susceptible to it.
Stress causes the overproduction of cortisol secretion which increases blood sugar levels in order for our body to cope with stress.
These hormones cause fluid retention and more fat to be stored.
Estrogen is another important factor in fat burning and metabolic rate as it stimulates epinephrine production, hormone growth for fat burning, and limits the breakdown of triglycerides.
Restricting your calorie intake will be beneficial if you are a man. However, it has the opposite effect on women.
Men tend to lose fat whereas women tend to gain weight instead!
This is due to the female’s body response as the body goes into “starvation mode”, and tries to preserve fat due to the lack of intake of calories, resulting in weight gain.
Hence, a higher intensity of resistance exercise is recommended by scientists in order to stimulate the release of body fat so that the fat can be burned to produce energy.
Also, stress management is an important factor. Stress can be managed by regular exercise, yoga, or meditation.
Sleep is also an important factor as having fewer hours of sleep causes you to be more irritable and stressed.
It is recommended to have at least 7-9 hours of sleep a day.
Avoid skipping meals, especially if you are taking part in high-intensity workouts.
Your body needs to have enough fat, protein, and carbohydrates, hence do not put yourself into starvation mode or at risk!
